Gentling the Beast。.。:∞♡*♥

Book 19 of Coveted Prey!

When the Blighten raided my village, my mother gave me her last words of advice.

“Find the biggest, most fearsome man and throw yourself at his mercy. There is no shame before the Goddess in doing whatever you must to survive.”

Which was easier said than done.

I lived in denial for a time, daydreaming of a handsome prince who would rescue me and take me to his grand castle. Here, we would live happily ever after, making royal babies.

Reality is cold and bitter.

No such prince comes.

And later, when my vulnerability as a bondservant manifests terrifying consequences, an unexpected savior swoops in.

Not a prince, but a hideous white orc and the ugliest beast I have ever met—a mute outcast with shifter blood but who cannot shift.

Only I sense he has a good heart, and I remember my mother’s advice.

Can I overcome my aversion?

Maybe he thinks I am ugly too?

Will I even survive mating such a fierce male?

But if I don’t try, who will be there to save me the next time human predators come around?

And so I decide, one way or another, that the white orcish monster is going to be mine.

Author Notes:

For those who have read the previous books in Coveted Prey, this is Doug and Jasmine's story. It has four distinct parts, each with its own story arc. There is lots of adventure in this book, and we will visit many places, some familiar and some new!

It's on the bigger side of the Coveted Prey series. [80k]

Gentling the Beast can be read as a standalone, although we meet previous characters, you don't need to have read their stories.

It has crossover with characters and/or events from Melody Unbound, Stolen by Darkness, Rapture, and Bound to the Pack, and ties off some loose ends as to what happened at the pack and with Tavion's father.

Previous characters we will meet: Winter and Jacob (Rapture), Melody and Bard (Melody Unbound and Rapture), Edwin (Stolen by Darkness), General Tulwin (Rapture), Fern and her mates, Ashe and the rest of the cast (Bound to the Pack).

Of course, we get our sweet HEA for Doug and Jasmine.

I have fallen in love with our gruff mute orc shifter, Doug, and Jasmine, our sweet, enduring, and eternally resilient heroine. I thought this would be a simple tale when I started writing, but those pesky characters have a voice of their own, and there turned out to be a lot more adventure to be told.

If you like books with a lot of emotion and feels, this is one for the collection.

PS. Young Melody is adorable. It is little wonder Edwin (Stolen by Darkness) decided life among the Blighten was no longer for him after meeting her.❤️

I'll leave you with a sweet teaser ~ Jasmine and Doug meet young Melody 💕

Jasmine

The steward—a crusty human freeman—introduces me to the fairy’s elderly guardian, who goes by the name of Bard. The stern beta with gray hair makes a curious companion for the fairy child.

Melody peeps around Bard’s legs at me… and Doug. She is assuredly fascinated by Doug. With red-gold hair and strange whirling silver eyes, the fairy child I’m to help care for is as pretty as her name.

“I’ll leave you to your duties,” the gruff steward says before striding away.

“She is faking shy,” Bard says with a sigh. “And does not like the company of the steward.”

Melody continues to eyeball Doug around Bard’s legs before she suddenly emerges and takes a meandering route over. Doug watches her approach with a raised brow.

“Melody,” Bard says, a warning in his voice.

Does he think Doug will hurt the child? I’m about to come to Doug’s defense when Melody closes her small hand around Doug’s large one.

Doug blinks as the tiny fairy begins to stroke his hand as though seeking to gentle the beast.

I bite my lip to hide my smile.

Bard grimaces. “Melody, what did we talk about? Orcs are not for petting.”

“You are so beautiful,” she says, her eyes taking on a gleam of deep admiration and ignoring Bard. “Did the Goddess paint you with snowflakes?”

Doug offers a grunt, but I see his lips tug up in the orc’s equivalent of a smile.

And so, a new stage of my life begins.
