When I woke up, I was naked, face down against rough bedding, and half-buried under a wall of hot flesh. It was dark, although I couldn’t readily ascertain if it was night time or I was within a darkened room. The scent hit me, rich Alpha pheromones that belonged to Hudson and brought an immediate sense of calm. Hazy images of my time in the medical emergency make-shift ward surged and scattered through my mind. We had saved many people—there were some that we could not.

Hudson’s gentle Alpha rumble battered at my distress. Like a balm over a wound, it eased the suffering without taking it entirely away.

“You did what you could,” he said, and that simple statement sent tears spilling down my cheeks. A rough hand, twice the size of mine, skimmed over my chest to enclose the front of my throat.

His hands could kill as easily as I could heal. Yet, the hold was gentle, and the pad of his thumb brushing over my cheek to wipe away the spilling tears grounded me. “It puts me in a temper when you cry like this,” he said, voice thick, but he did not sound angry, only sad.

There was so much sadness in operations like this, and the tears spilled harder. I hated it. Hated the war, the endless killing, and that suffocating sensation that permeated every facet of my life.

The comforting rumbled ceased. Spun onto my back, he rolled above me, growling low and deep—the kind he knew drove my body to respond. The face that stared down at me had many hard angles and little warmth, yet I had come to love that face as much as the man.

He was a huge, deadly Alpha. I was at his mercy—he didn’t have any, not with our enemy, not with the team who reported to him, and certainly not with me.

As my vision adjusted to the gloom, our eyes locked, and I knew he would be hard on me. This was how it must be between Hudson and I; he understood me at times better than I understood myself.

I needed to forget that life could be ugly.

I needed to remember that life could be beautiful.

That life could be perfect, if only for a moment.

That life could be breathtakingly sublime.

My breath sawed in and out of my chest. He would fuck me now, use me roughly until I couldn't remember anything but the perfect raw beauty of being possessed by my Alpha...

I've just hit the 50% mark in my new Controllers Book 0. This is based on Tolis (if you have read the series, this is where Lilly and the viral research are based before the Uncorrupted attack).

Where did this story idea come from?

I had a loose scene in my head where a muted Omega was introduced to a selection of Alphas. In my mind, this was a civilized setting, perhaps a little stately and grand. There would be three Alphas, and she would be invited to pick.

She didn't have to pick, and in this case, another day she would be introduced to three more until she did pick.

In my scenario, she picked, and thus began the story.

This scene ended up morphing into Ruthless Control.  I know there is not much of the above in that book! But it gives you an idea of how a writer's brain works, and how we take concepts and mash them about until they look nothing like the inception!

But, that idea, the presentation of the Omega and the selection stayed with me...Which leads us back to Controllers book 0.

I often have whole scenes pop into my head first thing in the morning or last thing at night. There is something about a sleepy brain that generates ideas. It's like you already have an idea, and that idea runs away with itself and morphs into something new.

I imagined this young Omega who had just gone through the program with her Alpha, whom she had picked. He would need to be ruthless, perhaps manipulative, and in this case, older and utterly adoring of his new Omega.

But yes...also intensely Alpha.

This is where the restaurant scene comes in. Until the restaurant, the story was all very vague. The characters without personality and the tone of the book undefined.

The restaurant scene is intense, it became the hinge-pin from which the full story unfolded in my mind...and it became the epicenter that shaped the two characters (Alpha and Omega) and provided a foundation for everything that happens in the rest of the book.

The scene itself will be a long way along, certainly past 50% mark. But that's just the way my mind works when writing. It's a bit like a scattergun blasting scenes backward and forward in time from that one defining moment.

I never quite know how the story will unfold when I start; the more you write, the more ideas pop up. I like the unplanned events, they are usually the most interesting.

This book has a very distinctive, dark-dystopian flavor.

I adore Verity; she has had a terrible lot in life, and revealing as an Omega has only made that worse. But, like all my books, she will get her HEA.

Mystery novel update: I thought it was going to be a novella...how little did I know. Yes, it's looking like a full novel. I'm already 10k into the draft, and I have all the major plot points worked out.

This is going to be Controllers book 0.

I always wanted to take a step back and look at Lilly's world while she was at the research center working with Erison Tsing.

The story follows the life of Verity, a young girl put through the Omega program under Lilly's care.

It's weird, but books sometimes just choose their own mood, and this book has a very definite mood that's a little different from my later books in the series. I normally have at least a smidgen of humor in there, but this is dark and unrelenting in the darkness.

It's also going to be less about an Omega with an Alpha, and more about Verity's journey to becoming an Omega, what it's like within the Omega community, and her sexual awakening there.

She does meet an Alpha, but I'm feeling like that may be after the halfway mark. He's much older than her. I've already written one scene for when they're together, and it's very, very intense. 🔥 Maybe it's after writing Hudson's book (he's kind of brutal), I felt like I wanted an Alpha who would be more adoring of his Omega while still being completely twisted and ruthless where the bedroom action is concerned.

Verity also has a strong voice and presence as a character. And the Alpha I've given her feels like he's delivering exactly what she needs after all she's been through.

I'm really enjoying this book!
